The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
The Key Stage 3 course, following the national curriculum, is broad and varied, offering students the ability to develop and test their scientific thinking in a way which gives them a firm foundation for Key Stage 4.
During years 7 and 8 our students follow the recognised 'Activate' schemes of work for science. As they study the biology, chemistry and physics subjects, there are opportunities to develop their practical skills by working scientifically to plan, measure, analyse and evaluate investigations as well as gaining an understanding of scientific attitudes. Textbooks and resources are available online through the Kerboodle website and every student has an individual log-in.
Year 7 - The first topic taught in year 7 Science is “Working Scientifically.”
This is followed by topics which can be taught in any order:
Biology - Structure and function of body systems, Reproduction, Cells
Chemistry - Particles and their behaviour, Elements, atoms and compounds, Reactions, Acids and alkalis

Year 8 - The following topics will be taught during year 8 in any order:
Biology - Health and lifestyle, Ecosystem processes, Adaptation and inheritance
Chemistry - The Periodic Table, Separation techniques, Metals and acids, The Earth
Physics - Electricity and magnetism, Energy, Motion and Pressure
